What CAs Do

If you think that CAs only do audits, taxes and accounting, think again. In addition to working in public practice, they can be found in senior positions in business, government and education.

CAs in Public Practice

All CAs begin their careers in public accounting, and many choose to continue this type of work throughout their careers. These CAs provide a variety of accounting and business advisory services to a wide range of clients - from individuals to large public corporations to start-up businesses. CAs in public accounting provide services in areas such as:
  • tax
  • audit
  • review and compilation
  • corporate and personal financial planning
  • information technology
  • business valuation
  • receivership
  • insolvency
  • forensic investigation, accounting and auditing
  • corporate finance
  • business start-up and expansion
  • business valuations
  • environmental accounting
  • risk assessment
Wherever they work, CAs provide a fundamental service to the operation of the Manitoba economy. They enhance decision-making and improve organizational performance through financial management, assurance, and other specialized expertise.

CAs in Business and Industry

Since corporate finances today are scrutinized very closely, many efforts are directed at monitoring practices and ensuring their quality. The competencies of CAs in business and in industry and their commitment to comply with the profession’s practice standards and rules of professional conduct add value and credibility to an enterprise's management. CAs who move to positions in industry develop and evaluate their company's financial and administrative policies, analyze information, and manage and direct departments, businesses and institutions. CAs work in all sectors of the economy--from professional sports teams to airlines...from construction companies to arts organizations, and in a variety of roles--from Controller to Chief Financial Officer...from Internal Auditor to Chief Executive Officer. Many are entrepreneurs, owning the company they manage.

CAs in Government

The expertise of CAs is needed at all levels of government to guide financial planning and control public finances. In addition to the provincial and federal auditors general, who are always chartered accountants, CAs are employed in various government departments, Crown corporations and organizations as senior public servants, internal auditors or financial analysts. Some are appointed ministers or deputy ministers and become leaders responsible for suggesting and implementing innovative solutions to improve the performance of government bodies.

CAs in Education

Because of their specialized training, CAs are in a position to teach related courses at universities or other post-secondary educational institutions. Many CAs make a significant contribution to society by teaching future leaders what they need to know, not only about accounting and taxation, but also about finance, business, values and ethics.
