2008  

Timothy McFadden, CA

Tim obtained his CA designation in 1999 and was made a Partner at Meyers Norris Penny in 2006. In addition to his professional activities, Tim volunteers his time assisting various committees in organizing many sports events hosted in the city of Brandon.

Curling is a passion of Tim’s. He has served as Treasurer for the 2002 Scott Tournament of Hearts, the national women’s curling championship, and as Treasurer for the 2004 and 2008 provincial mens’ curling championships. He was also Treasurer of the 2007 Manitoba Credit Unions Masters Championships, a provincial mens’ and womens’ masters curling championship.

Tim also donates his time to the summer sport of baseball. He has served as Treasurer of 2006 and 2008 Baseball Canada Senior Mens’ Championships, a national mens’ baseball championship series. He is currently the Treasurer for Simplot Millennium Park Inc., a project which oversaw the construction of eight baseball diamonds using less than 1% public funding.

 

Gerald Valois, CA

Gerry received his CA designation in 1997 and is currently Director, Business Advisory Services with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. In the past year and a half, Gerry founded “Canodia” (www.canodia.ca), a Canadian Registered Charitable Fund helping some of the poorest children in Cambodia.

Over the last year alone, Canodia (Canadians Helping Cambodia’s Youth) has fed hun¬dreds of children living in a garbage dump in Phnom Penh. Canodia also funded the purchase of a large piece of land and in a few months will start the construction of a three-storey home for over fifty youth from the dump. Using his CA skill set, Gerry made significant improvements to a local Cambodian charity, “The Center for Happiness”. He has also developed a Canadian sponsorship program and personally visits, interviews and takes many children out of the dump to a better life.

In our community, Gerry visits schools and involves the youth in philanthropy. Many Winnipeg schools fundraise, sponsor children, write letters, and receive photo updates and information about the garbage children.

 

Debra Young, CA

Debbie received her CA in 2002 and is currently a Financial Analyst with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Debbie joined the Board of Osborne House in 2006 and has helped them to go from operating at a deficit of over $60,000 to recording a surplus this past fiscal year.

As a member of the Christian rock band “One In Spirit”, Debbie helps organize and ex¬ecute various charity concerts. Two notable events include “Rock Till We Drop”, a 24-hour, one band concert that raised close to $12,000 for Siloam Mission, and “Turn On the Tap” for Samaritan’s Purse, that raised sufficient funds for 20 bio-sand water filters, which will provide safe water to communities in developing countries.

Debbie also regularly volunteers at Lower Fort Garry where she organizes a Discovery Game – a scavenger hunt for children to promote questions about the Fort’s history. Debbie has also participated in the Fort’s Candlelit Ghost Tours at Hallowe’en.

 

2007  

Henry Riendeau, CA

Henry obtained his CA degree in 1963 and has resided in Portage la Prairie since 1966. He is a Past President of the Portage Curling Club as well as the Portage Rotary Club, both of which he was an active member for over 30 years.

Henry has been Treasurer for the World Junior Curling Championships, the National Senior Curling Championships, Portage la Prairie Heritage Inc., Portage Kinsmen Club, and the Portage Centennial Committee. He is presently acting as Treasurer with the Community Foundation of Portage and District Inc. and Portage Soup Kitchen.

Since becoming Treasurer of the Community Foundation of Portage and District Inc. in 2001, Henry has helped grow the permanent Endowment Fund. It took 10 years to reach its first million, and only three short years to reach their second million.

Henry has been recognized by the Portage la Prairie Chamber of Commerce as the Business Person of the Year. He has and continues to unselfishly contribute his time and expertise to the betterment of his community.

 

Curtis Steiman, CA

Curtis has spent a lifetime serving his community. He was a member of the Winnipeg Kinsmen Club from 1963 to 1975 and Vice-President of Projects in 1975-1976.

Curtis served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA and the YMCA Camps Branch and was instrumental in helping grow attendance at Camp Stephens from 60% to 96%. He has been President and Chairman of the Building Committee and Congregation for the St. James Lutheran Church. Curtis spent 10 years on the Board of Regents of the Concordia Lutheran Seminary as well as 10 years on the Board of The Lutheran Foundation.

Curtis has been active with International Development Enterprises, an international non profit in poverty alleviation, for 16 years on the International Executive Committee and the Board. He has served on the Board of Governors for St. John’s Ravenscourt School as Board Chair and Finance Committee Chair as well as chairing the SJR Foundation.

Finally, in 2002 when Pregnancy and Family Support Services required new offices, Curtis took the position of advisor to the Board. Subsequently they acquired an addition to their Thrift Store and new offices.

 

2006  

Al Babiuk, CA

Al became a CA in 1991 and is currently the Chief Financial Officer with Loewen Windows in Steinbach.

Outside of his work responsibilities, Al volunteers with the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Al has been a member of the Finance and Operations Committee of the Art Gallery's Board of Governors for the past seven years.

Al has served as a WAG Board member for the past three years and holds the office of Vice-President, Finance and Operations. As Chair of the Finance and Operations Committee and a member of the Executive Committee, Al oversees all areas concerning the financial operation of the Art Gallery.

He has been a dedicated volunteer who has offered his time, expertise, and energy to the Art Gallery. Al assisted the WAG in restructuring its financial systems in order to operate more efficiently. He also developed a Cost Allocation Model that will assist the Art Gallery in making financial decisions well into the future.

 

Bryan Dewson, CA

Bryan earned his CA in 1983 and works for the Province of Manitoba as Group Leader - Mining Tax.

Bryan has also generously contributed a great many years to the community as a member of the Board of Directors of the Manitoba/Nunavut Division of the Arthritis Society.

Bryan served on the Arthritis Society board from 1983-2005 and during that period he held the role of Treasurer many times. The Arthritis Society in Manitoba is a relatively small operation without the capacity to retain in-house accounting staff. As a result, Bryan contributed above and beyond the traditional role of Treasurer during his time on the board.

During his 22 years on the board of the Arthritis Society, he actively assisted in the preparation of the financial statements and spent hours at year-end helping the staff bookkeeper and executive director.

 

Larry Hurtig, FCA

Larry attained his CA in 1962 and became a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Manitoba in 2001. He is President of Chartered Financial Services Inc. in Winnipeg.

Larry is also the Past President of Direct Action Support of Community Homes, an organization supporting group homes for the mentally handicapped for the community at large, where 36 people live in eight homes.

In keeping with his visionary style, he soon became the founding President of Versatech Charitable Foundation Inc. Versatech is one of the largest sheltered workshops for the mentally handicapped in Manitoba. There are over 270 men and women working at Versatech Industries Inc. and over 30 permanent staff. Through these two endeavours, Larry has provided a better life and a safe future for these men and women.

Larry also sits on the Fundraising Dinner Committee for the Prostate Cancer Association and is a volunteer with the Post Polio Network Manitoba Inc.

 

Wayne McWhirter, CA

Wayne received his CA in 1981 and is currently the Regional Managing Partner – Eastman Region for Meyers Norris Penny LLP.

Dedicating his time and giving back to the community, Wayne has been a member of the board of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce since 2004 and is currently serving as Treasurer. He is also presently Treasurer of the Manitoba Business Institute and served as Treasurer of the Lindenwoods Community Association from 1999 to 2004.

Involved with interests beyond business, Wayne has been a member and participant in the Manitoba Senior Co-ed Volleyball League since 2004. Active in sports for many years, he has also been an indoor soccer coach for Victoria - Lindenwoods (1998) and was a baseball coach for the Portage la Prairie Peewee League (1977-79).

Also active with the Institute, Wayne has served on the Student Education (1981-84), Technical and Research (1984-87) and Members' Activities (1987-92) Committees as well as the Real Estate Brokers Report Task Force (1992).

 

2005  

William Bodman, CA

Bill began his career in accountancy with the Selkirk firm of Sill Streuber Meger & Fiske in 1962. After obtaining his CA in 1968, he became Partner in Charge and in 1990 was selected as Administration Partner for Sill & Company. In 2001, the firm merged with BDO Dunwoody and in 2003, Bill retired from public practice.

After retiring, Bill joined The Thomas Sill Foundation Inc. as Governor and Treasurer and oversees the Foundation’s financial investments. He has also been instrumental in creating one website for all the community foundations in rural and northern Manitoba.

Dedicated to his community, Bill is a Past President of the Kinsmen Club of Selkirk, the Selkirk Development Committee and the Selkirk Youth Council. He was also a founding member of the Marine Museum of Manitoba in Selkirk and served on its board of directors, holding many different executive positions, for 25 years.

A dedicated sports fan, Bill was a key volunteer for many of Selkirk's minor sport organizations. He also served as Finance Chair for the Selkirk-hosted 2003 Western Canada Summer Games and the 1998-99 World Jr. Hockey Championship.

In 2004, the Selkirk Chamber of Commerce selected Bill as Selkirk's Citizen of the Year, an award presented annually to an individual who demonstrates a significant commitment to the communities of Selkirk, St. Andrews and St. Clements.

 

Julie Bubnick, CA

Julie received her CA in 1992 and is currently a sole practitioner. In addition to her work, Julie has made the time to volunteer for many different organizations, including countless hours with the Linden Woods Community Association and Community Centre.

When developers started building homes in Linden Woods in the early 1980's, Julie was on the initial planning committee charged with securing funds to build a Community Centre and attended numerous planning, financial and development meetings with the City of Winnipeg.

The Linden Woods Community Association was formed and Julie served as President for many years. From the start, she was instrumental in organizing and implementing regular fundraising campaigns.

Every year, Julie provides bookkeeping services and processes thousand of sports registration cheques for soccer, baseball, tennis and hockey and manages the financial aspect of Linden Woods' annual Christmas Craft Sale.

From opening the doors of the Community Centre for different groups to staffing the canteen, Julie spends, on average, 30 to 40 hours a week volunteering for the Community Centre. In addition to her volunteer legacy with the Linden Woods Community Association and Community Centre, Julie has served as Treasurer for many organizations, including Scouts, the Century Figure Skating Club, the Winnipeg Rowing Club and St. Luke's Anglican Church.

 

Raymond Cadieux, FCA

Ray received his CA in 970 and was elected an FCA in 1996. He is currently a sole practitioner and in addition to his work Ray has made outstanding contributions to CAA Manitoba, the Canadian Automobile Association and the American Automobile Association.

Over the past 22 years, Ray has served as a director for CAA Manitoba. He has served as the Board’s Chair and as Chair of the Nominating, Finance, Audit and Facilities committees.

While at CAA Manitoba, Ray served on the Board and as Chair of the Canadian Automobile Association (1995-97), providing leadership and direction to CAA clubs all across Canada. He then served on the American Automobile
Association's Board (1997-2005).

Ray has also contributed significantly to the Misericordia Hospital and The Sisters of the Misericorde. He has been a member of the Misericordia Hospital Board since 1993 and is currently serving as its Chair. During his time on the hospital Board, Ray has served on its Executive, Audit and Finance, Human Resources, Public Relations, Quality and Risk Management and Strategic Planning committees. At the request of the Sisters, Ray is also a Board member of Wolseley Family Place, an associated project of Misericordia Hospital for the underprivileged.

 

Gary Julius, CA

Gary received his CA in 1975. In addition to his professional duties, he has been a member of The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg since 1988, serving from the local to the national level. Gary has been the Club's President, Vice- President and has served four times as Treasurer. He has been the District Governor and District Deputy Governor in addition to serving on the National Board of Directors.

Beyond these elected positions, Gary has volunteered with various committees, again from the local to national level. He was elected a Life Member of the Kinsmen Club in 2001. Gary is currently serving as a member of the Kinsmen's National Risk Management Committee and as "KinKar" project chair for the Winnipeg Club.

Gary is also a current member of the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors of Manitoba Special Olympics. He has held the positions of President, Vice-President and Treasurer with Manitoba Special Olympics. He has also served Special Olympics at the national level at two National Winter Games and at the World Summer Games in 2001.

Committed to community, Gary was a founding member of the Winnipeg Chapter of "Operation Go Home", a charitable organization that helps street kids and runaways return home. He served as its first President (1994-96) and as Treasurer (1996-98).

 

Robert Kowalchuk, CA

Rob received his CA in 1994 and is currently a Senior Manager with the Audit team at KPMG LLP. Outside of his work obligations, Rob has made outstanding contributions to the Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba. Rob has been serving on the Board of Directors of the Cerebral Palsy Association since 1996. In the executive position of Treasurer, Rob has staunchly assisted in managing the Association's financial business. He has also actively supported and participated in fundraising efforts, especially the Stationary Bike Race, an event that has raised over a million dollars in its 16 year history.

As a member of the Stationary Bike Race Committee, Rob assists in the planning, organization and operation of the event which has involved up to 50 teams of 14 riders each and over 100 volunteers.

Rob takes responsibility for all the financial work at the Race. He has also taken his turn at recording the race statistics and transmitting them to the reader boards for all in attendance to keep track of Race results.

Rob also directs Association staff in the procedures required by financial institutions and governing bodies. Rob's overseeing of the financial matters of the Association as well as his astute understanding of the needs of its members have made a significant impact on the Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba and its members.

 

2004  

Robb Finnen, CA

Robb was admitted to membership in the Institute in 1971. He is a partner in the firm Finnen, Bettess & Finnen, Chartered Accountants. He has had a lengthy involvement with a number of community organizations over the years which makes him well-deserving of this recognition.

Robb has had extensive involvement with the Rotary Club of St. Boniface where he joined the Club's Board of Directors shortly after becoming a member in 1996 and he remains on the Board to this date. He is currently the Past President after serving terms as President in 2002-03, as well as Treasurer, Vice President and various other roles prior to that.

Robb has also taken a strong interest in Rotary's International Youth Exchange Program, serving as the Club's Youth Exchange Counselor since 1999. He has been involved in the recruitment and selection of local students for both the short-term and long-term exchanges. More significantly, he has been the counselor for the foreign students hosted by the Club during their one year exchange in Winnipeg.

Robb has also been active in the St. Vital Curling Club for many years, serving on the Board of Directors from 1979-89 and as President in 1987-88. He was awarded the Brian Holt Memorial Trophy in 1989 in recognition of his contributions as the Club's most outstanding member and in 1999 he was awarded an honorary life membership. Robb also served as a director of the Manitoba Curling Association from 1988-91 and served as a volunteer at various curling competitions including the 1991 and 2003 World Curling Championships and the 1998 Brier.

He has also been extensively involved with the Richmond Kings Community Centre where he served as the Vice-President Finance from 1990-98. In addition, he chaired committees negotiating and implementing two major building expansions in 1994 and 1997, as well as a parking lot expansion. Robb also coached/managed children's ringette and hockey teams over the years. All of these contributions were recognized by the Club when they appointed him Male Citizen of the Year in 1997.

 

Mark Gray, CA

After obtaining an LLB in 1979, Mark joined Price Waterhouse, Chartered Accountants in 1980 and was admitted to the Institute in 1983. He is currently a partner with the firm Gray & Brown, Chartered Accountants. Mark has played an enormous role in the success of the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba (CHF) over the past 15 years or so. In the late 1980's he began by volunteering to head up the accounting function for the Teddy Bear's Picnic and the Children's Miracle Telethon. He joined the CHF Board of Directors in 1993, and for the past 12 years has continuously served the Foundation in various capacities.

He has held various Executive positions including Vice-President at large, Vice-President Secretary/Finance, President and Past President. He has also served on or chaired various standing committees including the Finance Committee, the Foundations for Health Committee, the Manitoba Institute of Child Health Research Committee, the Manitoba Institute of Child Health Development Committee, and the Investment Committee. Currently he is Chair of the Advisory Council Committee.

Mark has been instrumental in the success of CHF by giving his time, expertise and advice in a number of areas. Most notable have been his contributions to "everything financial" within the Foundation. He was directly responsible for policy change and formalization of new processes by which the Foundation's budgets are prepared and ratified. He strengthened the Foundation's mechanism for reporting financial information to the Board, the public and various government agencies. He interpreted changes in federal tax laws with respect to issuance of tax receipts for special events and wrote the Foundation's policy to reflect those changes.

He has been a leader in the recruitment of other volunteers, including other CAs, to the Foundation's Finance, Investment and Executive Committees to ensure the financial continuity required by all non-profit organizations.

In 1999, Mark introduced a Planned Giving Program for the Foundation. This initiative has seen incredible growth since its inception and will be a major source of fundraising revenue for the Foundation for years to come. Finally, Mark used his legal expertise in designing legal agreements with the Health Sciences Centre Foundation in the joint Capital Campaign called "Foundations for Health".

 

Ron Smith, CA

Ron was admitted to membership in 1962 and retired in 1998 after a lengthy and successful career. Ron has been a member of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg West for 25 years and served on its Board of Directors for five years including one year as its President. He also chaired the Club's Polio Plus Committee in the late 1980's to the mid 1990's. Under Ron's leadership, the Club campaign exceeded its goal and raised $115,000 towards Rotary International's goal of $120 million. Ron also chaired other committees such as the Program and Membership Committees, in addition to serving on the Youth Exchange program.

Ron was also involved with Rotary Club at the district level where he served on a number of committees and was appointed by the District Governor to organize the new St. James Club, which remains very active to this day.

He has been very active with his church serving as a member of Vestry for a number of years including terms as the People's Warden and the Rector's Warden. Ron chaired the Every Member Canvass Committee as well as the Property Committee over the years.

Ron's community/recreational club involvement has been diverse. Ron also chaired the New Clubhouse Committee at the Victoria Beach Yacht Club. This committee recommended a plan, gained member approval, raised the necessary funds, engaged a contractor and supervised construction of the new clubhouse. Finally, Ron served a term on the Norberry Community Club Board of Directors.

Ron has also made his mark in support of the political system since the mid 1960's. He has been a director of the Riel PC Association for 20 years and served as Vice President of the Association for two years and President for three years. He has been a member of the St. Boniface Federal PC Association as a member of its Executive. Finally, Ron has trained constituencies in the Provincial PC Association about effective fund raising techniques.

 

2003  

Campbell McIntyre, CA

Campbell received his CA designation in 1973 and is currently President of Empire Iron Works Ltd. Through the years he has volunteered with many organizations. Campbell served five years on the Board of Directors of the Ronald McDonald House and was Vice-President for two years. Campbell has coordinated the Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament for the last 15 years, which has raised in excess of $500,000 for the organization.

Campbell began on the Rainbow Stage Board in 1998 as Treasurer and is currently serving his second year as President. Under Campbell's leadership, Rainbow Stage went from a deficit position to a positive position within his first three-year term as President.

For the past 15 years Campbell has been on the Vestry of St. Saviour's Anglican Church and has undertaken various duties, including that of Treasurer, and was the driving force behind fundraising for the Church expansion. Campbell is currently a member of the Transcona District Pipers and Drummers Association where he has served as President for two years, the W.A.S.O. (an agency that supports people with mental disabilities), the Winnipeg Clubs Hockey Association, the Neutropenia Society, and the Winnipeg Irish Club.

He has coached soccer, hockey and baseball teams for the Gateway Community Club and has served in various capacities on the Board of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, including two years as President. He has also assisted in the fundraising efforts to open two homes for Dove Homes Inc., an agency that provides group homes for people with mental disabilities. Campbell was elected to the Board of Directors of the Rossmere Golf and Country Club in 1997 where he has served as Treasurer and President.

 

Gord Pawling, CA

Gord obtained his CA designation in 1961 and is currently retired. Active in the community, two areas where Gord spends a tremendous amount of his time each year is volunteering with the Shrine Circus and the Diocese of Rupert's Land.

Gord has been a volunteer with Shrine Circus operations for the past 25 years. He is Treasurer of the Shrine Circus Fund and is Treasurer for the annual Circus each year where he is also responsible for the cash room. Gord also sits on the Board of Directors for the Shrine Circus Planning Committee and is actively involved with the Shrine Patient Transportation Fund.

Since 1980, Gord has volunteered countless hours as Treasurer for the Diocese of Rupert's Land. He has given a significant amount of time over the past 23 years. Gord has remained in leadership position for more than 20 years with the Diocese of Rupert's Land, significantly enhancing their operation through sharing of his expertise. He took responsibility as an officer of the Diocese in very difficult financial times and avoided a serious financial crisis with ingenuity and diplomacy, where he secured the funds to keep the Diocese operational.

As part of his work as Treasurer with the Diocese, Gord lends support to the Bishop, the accountant, and program staff in projects and ministries. He also lends financial expertise to the Diocese and related charities, in addition to giving advice and imparting knowledge to a multitude of committees.

 

Terry Pratt, CA

Terry obtained his CA in 1998 and is currently a Manager with Deloitte & Touche LLP. In addition to his duties there, Terry has made the time to volunteer countless hours with the Manitoba Wheelchair Sport Association (MWSA).

Two years ago the MWSA was experiencing difficulties. The Executive Director had passed away, the President moved to Ontario, and the financial outlook of the organization was not looking very good. Terry, already an active member of the organization, decided to take a hands-on approach. He became President of the Board of Directors and promptly put into place a well thought-out financial plan which has put the organization back on track and may allow the MWSA to eliminate their deficit by the end of the next fiscal year.

Terry's contributions go well beyond his role as President. He has contributed many hours assisting in the coaching of young wheelchair basketball players. Terry also acts as an ambassador for Manitoba's Wheelchair Basketball Program, attending meetings across the country and constantly recruiting new players to the sport. Terry's unique blend of financial savvy and knowledge of Wheelchair Sport programming has enabled the MWSA to be on firm financial ground while continuing to provide high quality programming for members.

 

2002  

Brian Janzen, CA

Brian received his CA designation in 1989 and is currently Senior Tax Manager with Deloitte & Touche. Brian has been the firm coordinator for the Senior Citizen's Tax Clinic for many years, as well as the Deloitte & Touche rep for the United Way office campaign. Outside of work, children and youth have been a focal point of Brian's community service. He is the current Treasurer of Inter-City Day Care, in which he has been involved for the past 12 years. He is also currently serving as Treasurer of Directions for Children, Youth and Families, and is the former Treasurer of Child Find Manitoba.

Through his dedicated involvement to Winnipeg Harvest as Treasurer and team member for the past nine years, Brian's expertise and guidance has been instrumental in helping to feed hungry Manitobans. From working in the warehouse unloading trucks and building food hampers to serving on the Board of Directors, Brian is also active in various other committees of Winnipeg Harvest, including the Executive Committee, the Finance Committee (Chair), and the Personnel Committee.

Brian offers leadership in budgeting and fiscal management at Winnipeg Harvest and ensures the organization adheres to budget and follows GAAP guidelines. Brian assisted Winnipeg Harvest in creating and implementing its Planned Giving Program and his management of investments enables Winnipeg Harvest to keep operational throughout the year, regardless of donor trends.

 

Kenneth Lee, CA

Ken obtained his CA designation in 1975 and is currently a partner with Stefanson & Lee. While continuing his practice and being a shareholder and active director of five local businesses, Ken has also generously donated of his time to the community. He was instrumental in the turning around of Assinibioa Downs and guided the Pine Ridge Golf Club through some difficult periods. Ken was also involved in the PanAm Games, serving as a member of the Bid Committee (1993-1997) and on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee (1997-1999).

Other organizations and events have benefited from Ken's involvement. His interest in sports led him to be VP of Operations of the Western Canada Games (1988-1990) and Assistant Chair, VIP Tent of the Grey Cup Committee (1991).

Calling on his professional expertise, Ken has also served as Director of the Manitoba Food & Restaurant Association (1991-1995), Director of Finance of the Pine Ridge Golf Club (1991-present), and Director of Finance, Manitoba Jockey Club (1993-present).

With an interest in Manitoba and promoting its diverse attractions to others, Ken was Director of the Manitoba Tourism Committee (1994-1995). He has served as President of Pine Ridge Golf Club (2000-2001) and is Director and Treasurer of the Tuxedo P.C. Association (2000 - present).

 

Lorna McLeod, CA

Lorna received her CA in 1989 and is currently Vice-President, Finance with TruServ Canada Cooperative Inc. Lorna has been a reliable, dedicated, and knowledgeable volunteer with the Kidney Foundation of Canada for the past 12 years at both the local and national levels. She is a major contributor to the National Executive Committee and takes on extra duties. Lorna has a wealth of knowledge of Kidney Foundation policies and has been a key leader in the improvement of the Foundation's financial practices and policies. She has also been instrumental in working with Revenue Canada to come to a compromise on accounting procedures.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada has been a focal point for Lorna's volunteer involvement. She has been the Treasurer, President, and is currently Chair of the Volunteer Recognition Committee with the Manitoba branch of the Kidney Foundation.

At the national level of the Kidney Foundation, Lorna has served as the Treasurer, Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee, and as a member of the Investment and Compensation Committee. She spearheaded a review of the Kidney Foundation's national financial policies and as Chair of the National Financial Review Task Force she initiated a review to improve the national budget process.

Lorna has made a significant contribution to presenting and communicating financial statements, proposals, and issues to national board members, better enabling them to fulfill their governance and stewardship roles.

 

Heather Mitchell, CA

Heather obtained her CA designation in 1993 and is currently Controller with TruServ Canada Cooperative Inc. Giving of her time and talents, Heather has been involved with the Ronald McDonald House for almost 13 years. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors, she has been co-chair of the Ronald McDonald House charity golf tournament for the past 11 years, a major fundraising event which raises over $35,000 annually for the House. Heather was also instrumental in planning the 10th Anniversary celebration in 1994 and has assisted with the annual fashion show fundraiser for the duration of her term on the Board.

In 1990, Heather began at the Ronald McDonald House serving as Treasurer in an ex-officio capacity. That same year she also became a Weekend Manager, devoting one weekend each month to supervise at the House. Heather excelled at interacting with the families and putting them at ease. She held this position for three years.

After three years as ex-officio Treasurer and weekend manger, she joined the Board of Directors where she continued her role as House Treasurer. Heather retired from the Board in 1999 and her nine years as Treasurer as well as the rest of her involvement is a testament to her commitment and dedication to the Ronald McDonald House.

Manisha Pandya, CA

After receiving her CA designation in 1991 Manisha played a major role in reestablishing the United Way organization in Thompson. Tackling this project included the reinstatement of a board of directors, recruiting member organizations, and redoing all the procedures and rules of operation. The United Way has since become a major non-profit contributor to the Thompson community.

Manisha served on the National Board of United Way/Centreaide Canada for six years. During the last two years of her term she held the position of Treasurer and in 1999 she received the Chair’s Award of Distinction and Service for United Way/Centreaid Canada. In 1997 Manisha received the National Flare Magazine Volunteer Award, presented to five young Canadian women from a group of 125 applicants, in recognition of her unique volunteer efforts.

Continuing to make community service a significant part of her life, Manisha is currently the President of the Rotary Club of Thompson. She continues her activities with local East Indian cultural organizations such as the Padam Bhartiya Cultural Club, Prathana Samaj, and the Gujarati Cultural Society of Manitoba. She has accepted the position as Chair of the Investment Committee for the Board of Directors of Manitoba Public Insurance.
