Up to three Awards are presented annually to a CA or successful UFE candidate in good standing with the Manitoba Institute who, within the first ten years since passing the UFE, demonstrates:
- An ongoing commitment and excellence in his/her professional, community or other volunteer involvement; and/or
- Exemplary work performance.

Geoffrey Garland , CA
Geoff began his career with Sill Streuber Fiske and Company (now BDO) in 1997. He wrote and passed the UFE in 1999, received his CA designation in 2000 and completed the CICA In-depth Tax Course in 2004.
In 2009, Geoff was admitted to Partnership with BDO as Tax Partner in the Winnipeg office. He is the co-author of a taxation course delivered through provincial CA Institutes across the country and has been a seminar leader for various Tax PD courses for the Manitoba Institute since 2003. He is also a tutorial leader for the BDO National Tax Reviewers Course and the CICA In-depth Tax Course.
Geoff is an active volunteer. He served as Treasurer of Peak Performers Toastmasters (2004) and the Freeze Frame Children’s Film Festival (2005). He also served on the CICA’s Advisory Committee for the 2009 National Tax Conference and serves on the Institute’s Discipline Committee. Geoff also makes time to coach soccer and Timbits Hockey. |

Lisa Kondrat, CA
Lisa wrote the UFE in 2006, placing on the National Honour Roll. She obtained her CA designation in 2007 and was quickly promoted to Manager in the Assurance and Advisory Business Services practice at Ernst & Young.
Lisa has taken the lead in the E&Y office in developing an in-depth knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards. She has been involved in presenting and teaching senior management and Audit Committees about IFRSs as well as the internal training of her peers within the office.
Lisa was a CASB marker and is active in training and mentoring the firm’s CASB students and UFE writers. Also active in the community, she currently sits on the Habitat for Humanity “Women Build” committee and is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Rainbow Society. She is the driving force behind the 2nd annual “EY Cares Day” where the entire office closes for a day and everyone volunteers in a charitable initiative.

Michael Angers, CA
Mike wrote and passed the UFE in 2000, receiving the Manitoba gold medal for highest standing on the UFE and tying for fifteenth place on the CICA Honours List. He obtained his CA designation in 2001.
Shortly after receiving his designation, Mike started the Winnipeg office of HMA Chartered Accountants as the Managing Partner. He has grown this practice to now employ 10 staff members. He also is a co-owner of an accounting software company that sells and services many different accounting packages.
Mike is very active in the community. He was a board member of the Winnipeg Downtown Biz Association for five years, during which time he also served on the Executive Committee and as Treasurer of the Finance Committee. He is a member of the Young Entrepreneurs’ Organization and was a member of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce Taxation Task Force Board. Mike also finds time to not only play hockey but coach numerous minor hockey teams as well. |

Shawn de Delley, CA
Shawn wrote the UFE and received his CA designation in 1999. Following that, he completed Parts 1-3 of the CICA In-depth Tax Course. He was made a partner with Meyers Norris Penny in June 2007 and became Regional Tax Partner for the Westman Region of MNP in 2008.
Shawn enjoys the educational side of the profession. He was a UFE marker from 2000-2005, the Assistant Team Leader at the UFE Marking Centre in 2006 and has been an internal UFE preparation marker and mentor for MNP since 2000. He is also involved with the teaching of numerous tax courses for the firm.
His community involvement is just as strong. Shawn is Treasurer of the Brandon University Foundation, Chair of the Brandon University Investment Committee, and a member of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce. Shawn served on the Board of the Brandon United Way and he has also coached youth bowling and soccer for the past four years. |

Lise Deleurme, CA
Lise wrote the UFE and received her CA designation in 2001. With almost 10 years of experience, she quickly became a mentor for students and young CAs at BDO Dunwoody. Knowledgeable in tax issues, she became the lead auditor for many mid to large size clients and was quickly promoted to manager in the firm.
After the birth of her daughter, Lise decided to open her own full-time office in the town of Notre Dame de Lourdes and a part-time office in St. Claude. Five years after opening, Lise employs two full-time staff members and an additional two or three during the busy tax season.
Lise is also very involved in her community. She is the president of her local Chamber of Commerce. She has trained business administration students from Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface for month-long work experience placements, offers a high school placement for a student who earns a high school credit by working in her office and also tutors university accounting students. |

Cade Arason, CA
Cade began articling with Deloitte & Touche LLP in 1997 and was admitted to the Manitoba Institute in 2000. Within two years, Cade had been promoted to Manager, Assurance & Advisory Services. In 2005, Cade left D&T for Cangene Corporation, where he is currently Manager, Internal Control over Financial Reporting.
Cade has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Winnipeg Ronald McDonald House since 2001, and is currently in his first year as President. He is also Chair of the Family Room Committee, past Chair of the Human Resources and Policy Committee and Member of the Finance and Investment Committee within RMH. Cade is also currently Chair of the Members’ Activities Committee for ICAM.
While at D&T, Cade played an active role in staff training and mentoring. He also has been a UFE marker for the CICA and a module reviewer for CASB.

Todd Birkhan, CA
Todd graduated from Brandon University with distinction 1993 and received his CA designation in 1996. He is currently a Senior Manager with BDO Dunwoody LLP in Brandon.
After receiving his CA, Todd took on the role of being in charge of the assurance work for BDO's Brandon office. He has been sharing his expertise in assurance within the firm since 2000, providing training and guidance to the Manitoba region. Todd became a Senior Manager with BDO in 2001. Todd is the audit manager responsible for all large audits in Brandon and Virden offices and acts as a mentor for CAs and students within these offices.
In addition to being a key member of the BDO team, Todd plays hockey and is an active volunteer in the community. He is currently Vice-President of Brandon Crime Stoppers and this summer Todd was Director of Finance for the Special Olympics Summer Games held in Brandon.

Gord Dowhan, CA
Gord wrote and passed the UFE in 2001 and obtained his CA designation in 2003. Continuing to develop his professional abilities, he also received his CPA designation in 2003 and was appointed to Senior Manager with the Winnipeg office of KPMG LLP in Winnipeg in 2005.
Demonstrating his dedication and enthusiasm through his professionalism, Gord dedicates considerable time to mentoring many young professionals. Overall, Gord is highly respected for his development of people, advocacy of the profession and personal commitment and diligence to challenge young professionals and be an inspiration during their career development.
He is active in recruiting university graduates to the profession. Gord also dedicates a large portion of his personal time to volunteer work within the profession. He has been a marker for the UFE for several years and is serving as the UFE Coordinator for KPMG. He was also the UFE Coordinator for Grant Thornton prior to joining KPMG.

Tanya Knight, CA
Tanya received her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Manitoba in 1997, wrote and passed the UFE in 1999 and acquired her CA designation in 2000. Continuing with her education, she is also completing her Certified Strategic Performance designation. In June of 2006, Tanya was admitted to partnership in Meyers Norris Penny LLP, making her one of the fastest CA to partner professionals MNP-Westman has had in years.
In addition to her professional successes, Tanya is also active in her community. She has been a board member of the Brandon Family YMCA since 1999 and is currently serving as President. With an obvious interest in sports, she has been Treasurer for the Brandon Senior Women Volleyball League since 2003 and has served as a member of the Westman Kidsport Committee (2000-04). Tanya has also been a member of the Business Development Committee with the Brandon Chamber of Commerce (2004-05).

Kimberley Metcalfe, CA
Kim joined Deloitte &
Touche LLP in 1996,
wrote and passed the UFE in
1999 and obtained her CA
designation in 2000.
She is currently a Senior
Manager in the Assurance and
Advisory group with Deloitte.
Kim is also the office's leader
of the CASB Coaching program
in Deloitte's Winnipeg office. In 2001, she was responsible
for re-developing the office's program in response to the
new CASB program.
Kim is one of the co-leaders of Deloitte's university campus
recruiting team. She has also acted as an instructor in the
firm's internal professional development and learning and
growth programs at both the local and national levels.
As a previous President of the Commerce Student's
Association (1996-97), Kim remains committed to supporting
the I.H. Asper School of Business. She is a member of the
Board of The Young Associates (2003-present) where she has
served as the Membership Chair, responsible for recruiting
members to join the organization.
Kim has recently become involved in the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation and was a member of the
Special Events Committee which is responsible for planning
the Starry Starry Night fundraising gala held this April.
Kim has shown her commitment to the profession by
volunteering as a member of the Members' Activities (present)
and University Recruitment (2002-present) committees
and as a marker for CASB modules. |

Andrew Stibbard, CA
Andrew is a Senior
Manager in the Audit and
Assurance group of
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
He wrote and passed the UFE
in 1997 and obtained his CA
designation in 2001.
In addition to his career
accomplishments, Andrew has
demonstrated a strong commitment
to community involvement and volunteerism.
Andrew has volunteered with the River Health Centre
Foundation's Cycle on Life Committee (2000-02) and has
served as Treasurer for the Board of the Osborne on the Red
Condominium Corporation (2001-02).
Along with the regular responsibilities of Treasurer,
Andrew formalized the process surrounding the Corporation's investments and designed policies surrounding investment
restrictions, investment approvals and signing authorities.
In 2003, Andrew became a member of the Executive
Committee and Treasurer of the Board of Directors of
ChildFind Manitoba Inc. He is currently Chair of ChildFind's Finance Committee.
Andrew supported management in the design of the association’s web initiative, Cybertip.ca.
In 2004, ChildFind received funding from the federal government and major Internet Service Providers to launch
Cybertip.ca nationally. With the amount of money being
raised, Andrew recognized the need for a financial person on
the staff and initiated the hiring of a Director of Finance and
Administration for the organization. |

Dean Austin, CA
Ever since he started his professional career in
1996 as a summer student at Scarrow & Donald
LLP, Dean has demonstrated that he had the
required initiative and drive to succeed as a CA. He
placed fourth in Manitoba on the 1997 Uniform
Final Examination and became a member of the
Institute in 1999.
As a result of his excellent work
ethic and his ability to take on responsibility within
the firm, Dean was promoted to manager in 2000.
Dean is active with the Institute, having served on
the University Recruitment Committee since 2003.
He also meets annually with new graduates from the
University of Manitoba's Faculty of Dentistry where
he discusses the different types of entities under
which dentists can practice and the income tax ramifications
of each.
Dean became a marker for the Institute's UFE preparation course as well as for the UFE. In 1998, he became a sessional instructor at the U of M. Dean became involved in the Manitoba
Institute's student education program in 1999, teaching the Intermediate Auditing course from 1999
until 2001, when the CA School of Business (CASB) was formed. He also taught student courses for
the Saskatchewan Institute.
Dean became involved with CASB from its inception, first as a facilitator and as a case
simulation evaluator. Dean was quickly acknowledged by CASB developers as one of the leading members
of the CASB facilitator team and was asked to participate in the regular module updates of
learning materials. He also participated in a select group of facilitators assembled to identify the necessary
program responses to the CASB External Review which was conducted in 2003. Dean has also co-led CASB's UFE preparation course in Manitoba since 2002, and is a head facilitator for Module
Five. |

Bob Lawrence, CA•CBV
Bob qualified as a Chartered Accountant in
Manitoba in 1995 and advanced very quickly in
his firm. In 1999 he became a partner in the Brandon
office of BDO Dunwoody LLP. He is also the managing
partner of the firm's part-time office in
Virden. He continues to build a diverse client base in
both offices.
Bob just completed a business development training
program called the Rainmaker Academy within
BDO and has acted as a a mentor to young CAs in
the office and the region. Bob has provided courses
on business development to the BDO offices in
Central Canada as well as to the firm's 2003 Senior
Manager's conference.
In 2001, Bob continued to develop his knowledge
and skills and received his CBV designation while achieving the third highest mark in Canada that year.
He has also been active in the Brandon community. Bob has been a board member of the Westman
Dreams for Kids - a charity dedicated to granting dreams to kids who are facing a serious illness in the
Westman area. He has just recently completed a year as President of that organization. Bob has also
been involved in coaching minor sports in Brandon.
Bob has been active in the profession, as well. He was elected to Council in 2000 and served on it
from 2000 to 2004. During that time, Bob served on the Risk Policy and the Audit Committees including
one year as Chair of the Audit Committee. More recently, in 2003-2004, he was the Institute's
Secretary-Treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee. |

David Sachvie, CA
David has been a member of the Manitoba
Institute since March 1996. Since that time, he
has displayed an ongoing commitment to excellence
in his career, including exemplary work performance
at Deloitte & Touche LLP, where he has been
employed since he was a summer student in 1992.
David is presently a Senior Manager in the
Enterprise Risk Services group of the Winnipeg
office of Deloitte & Touche LLP.
David has acted as an instructor in his firm's local
and national levels in the areas of systems and internal
control, internal control audit methodology and
computer audit software. He is also the Director of
Technology for the Winnipeg office of Deloitte.
In addition to being a CA, David completed the studies and examinations required to obtain the Information Systems Audit and Control Association's
internationally recognized CISA designation. He also obtained his Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation
from the Institute of Internal Auditors and has been responsible for chairing national
professional development conferences that have been hosted by the local chapter.
David has also been active in the community where he has volunteered as an Account Executive
for the United Way. This work included coordinating and meeting with senior executives from
Winnipeg professional services firms for the purpose of continuing and strengthening the relationship
with United Way. He has also volunteered as Treasurer for his local church and presently assists in an
advisory capacity for the finance committee. |

Colleen Johnson, CA
Since receiving the gold medal for the highest
mark in Manitoba on the UFE in 1993,
Colleen has continued to demonstrate the
determination and drive for excellence that
contributed to winning that award.
Colleen joined KMPG in 1991 and obtained
her CA designation in 1994. During her
KPMG career Colleen spent two years in
Prague, Czech Republic (1994-96), where she
played an important role in building the
KPMG practice in the emerging Czech economy,
both by leading assurance and due
diligence engagements and by contributing to
the development of the Czech national staff.
In 1998, Colleen joined Manitoba Hydro
where she has advanced quickly and is now Financial and Business Development Analyst,
Downtown Office Project, with Corporate Planning and Development.
In addition to her career accomplishments, Colleen has demonstrated a strong commitment
to community involvement and volunteerism.
She is currently serving the second year of a three year term on the Board of Trustees of the
Manitoba Theatre Centre. As a Board Member Colleen has chaired the Black and White Ball
Silent Auction Committee and worked on the Corporate Campaign.
Colleen has also acted as an advisor for the Junior Achievement Program (1999-2000), a volunteer
for the Pan Am Games (1999) and has served as a Board member and Treasurer of
Artspace (1997-2000).
Colleen is active with the Institute as well. She has served on the High School Scholarship
(1993-2003), the Student Education (1997-98), and the Public Relations (1998-99)

Jean McClellan, CA
Jean started her professional career with
Coopers & Lybrand (now
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP) as a summer
student in 1995. She wrote and passed the
UFE in 1996 and obtained her CA designation
in 1998. Jean completed the Chartered
Business Valuator (CBV) program in 2000
and obtained her CPA designation in 2001.
From 1995 to 1998, Jean was a member of PwC's Audit and Business Advisory Services
Department. She then transferred into the Financial Advisory Services (FAS) Group of
PwC, was promoted to Manager in 2000 and
in 2002 was promoted to Vice President.
As an advisor to The Public Utilities Board
of Manitoba, Jean works with an interdisciplinary team to analyze complex filings and identify
issues.Jean has demonstrated her commitment to the development and success of the Winnipeg
FAS Group and was presented with an Excellence in Recruiting Award at a National PwC
conference in 2002.
She also volunteers a great deal of time to the community. Jean is the Treasurer of the
Executive Committee for the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce and is actively involved
with the Christmas Cheer Board, The Teddy Bear's Picnic and the Mother/Daughter Walk
for Heart and Stroke.
Jean has shown her commitment to the profession by volunteering as a member of the
Members' Activities Committee and as a volunteer at the Senior Citizens' Tax Clinic. |

Fred Horbaty, CA•CISA
Fred joined Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP) in 1995. He obtained his CA designation in 1998 and his CISA designation in 2001. Fred was quickly promoted within the firm and is currently a manager with the firm's risk management group. While Fred has specialized in information systems audit and controls, he has also worked as a marker for the UFE preparation course (1999-2001) and for the CA School of Business during the summer of 2002.
Fred has supported community activities and professional organizations throughout his professional career. Since 1999, Fred has contributed a significant amount of his free time to advance the Information Systems Internal Audit profession within the province through his role as Treasurer with the Winnipeg chapter of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association.
Fred has also been involved in numerous other charitable activities including the Annual Teddy Bear's Picnic, Senior Citizens Tax Clinic, MS 105 Bike Tour, and as Director and Treasurer at the Transcona Historical Museum.

Richard Potter, CA
Rick began his career with Ernst & Young, moved to Burke Newman and joined Meyers Norris Penny LLP in 1994. He obtained his CA designation in 1995, receiving the J.D. Blazouske Award for the fifth highest standing in the UFE (1994).
Rick's professional competency was quickly recognized and he was admitted to partnership in the firm in 2002. Involved in Institute activities, he has worked as a Senior Citizen's Tax Clinic volunteer (1994-1998), a UFE preparation course marker, and has served on the University Recruitment Committee (2000-2002). Rick was nominated to the CICA Board of Examiners in 1998 and also served on the CICA Competency Task Force and Competency Map Committee.
Rick's efforts extend past the office and have benefited various organizations within the community. He has served as a board member and treasurer of the Manitoba Association of Community Arts Council (1994- 1997) and as a board member of the Ducks Unlimited Winnipeg South Banquet Committee (1998-2002). Active with youth, Richard has volunteered his time to work as a soccer coach (2001-2002) and was also treasurer of Junior Achievement of Manitoba Inc. (2002).

Douglas Tkach, CA
Doug received his CA designation in
1993 and is currently Director,
Financial Control at Great-West Life.
Doug's interest in education resulted in
his involvement with the UFE preparation
program (1992-1998) and
drew him to volunteer for the
Student Education Committee (1994-1996).
He has also served on the
Professional Development
Committee (1996-2000)
and the Professional
Conduct Committee (2000-
2002).
Doug joined the CICA Diversity Workgroup (1995-
1997) and presented the results of its
work on diversity issues to the ICAM
Council. He also served on the ICAM
committee involved in the CICA
visioning process (1997-1999). Doug
was recently elected to serve on the ICAM Council.
Doug has also been an active volunteer within the community.
He has served as Treasurer, Vice-Chair, and Chair
(2000) of Faith Lutheran Church.
In 1999, the congregation received approval from the
provincial government to build an 80-bed personal care
home in St. Vital. Doug was a founding member of
the board of Faith Personal Care Home Inc. and
has been instrumental in the ongoing negotiations
with the government, process planning,
obtaining suitable land for the development
and building/site design.
During the same time, Doug also became
treasurer of The Faith Foundation, established
to raise funds for St. Vital charitable initiatives,
including the personal care home.
In addition to his extensive involvement in the community,
Doug has recently enrolled in the Chartered Financial
Analyst designation program. |

Charles Henaire, CA
Charles began his career as a CA student with Touche Ross, where he was promoted to manager within one year of completing his CA designation. After almost seven years in Audit with Deloitte & Touche, Charles left to join Great West Life as Associate Manager, Expense Reporting. He advanced quickly and is now Director of IS Financial Management & Planning.
Actively involved with the Institute, Charles has been a member of various committees since 1992 and served on Council since 1996. He was Chair of the Members’ Activities Committee (1996- 1997) and Director of the Manitoba Chartered Accountants Foundation (1998- 2001). With an evident interest in CA education, Charles has worked as a marker for the Institute (1994-1998) and was a Manitoba Representative for the 1995, 1996, and 1997 UFE Review.
Making time to be involved in the community, Charles has volunteered with Prairie Theatre Exchange (1993- 1994), the Treasury Management Association of Canada - Manitoba (1994-1996), and the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba (1991-1999) where he has been Treasurer, a member of the Executive Committee, a Board Member (1991-1995), and a member of the Nominating Committee (1998- 1999). |

Sean Marek, CA
Sean wrote the UFE in 1995 and took
home the W.W. Shepherd Prize for the
fourth highest standing in Manitoba. He
began his career as a CA student with
Scarrow & Donald. During that time he
founded MCR Systems Inc., an information
technology consulting firm that continues
to expand its operations. In 1999,
at the age of 27, Sean was made a partner
at Craig & Ross, Chartered Accountants
and has recently earned his Certified
Public Accounting (CPA) designation.
Sean has been lecturing for the University
of Manitoba at both the undergraduate
and graduate levels. He has also been teaching Advanced Financial
Accounting Topics for the Institute since
1998 and his students have consistently
rated him one of the best lecturers with
the Institute.
Committed to the profession, Sean is
a member of the University of Manitoba’s
Continuing Education Accounting
Advisory Committee which advises the
Continuing Education Faculty on its
accounting programs. He was also a
member of the Manitoba Education and
Training Professional Advisory Committee
which was formed to help improve
accounting education at the Manitoba
high school level. |
