Lifetime Achievement Award

This award recognizes sustained distinction in service to the profession or career or community achievement, which brings honour to the profession throughout one's lifetime.

In order to ensure that this award is considered to be truly unique, a maximum of one Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented annually. In fact, in some years, a Lifetime Achievement Award may not be presented if a worthy candidate is not identified.

2009  

Gregg Hanson, FCA

Gregg Hanson began his career in the banking industry, entering the management training program of the Royal Bank in Winnipeg in 1971. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1976 and obtained his CA designation in 1979.


His first job with his new CA designation was as Accounting Manager at Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, where he would spend the majority of his career. He held various positions in the company including the Controller of the US Operations in San Diego for three years until he was brought back to Winnipeg in 1985 to manage the Winnipeg branch of the company. He became Vice President of Wawanesa in 1990 and President and CEO of the company in 1992 – a position he held for 15 years.


Gregg remains involved in the Wawanesa group of companies as he sits on the Board of Directors of the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, Wawanesa Life Insurance Company, and Wawanesa General Insurance Company. Gregg also currently sits on the Board of Directors of James Richardson and Sons Ltd. and MTS Allstream.


Elected an FCA by the Manitoba Institute in 1998, Gregg also received a Fellowship in the Life Management Institute (1981) as well as a Fellowship in the Certified Insurance Professionals (1989). Gregg was presented with St. Paul’s High School’s prestigious Ignatian Challenge Award in 1998 and last year Gregg received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Manitoba Alumni Association.


Throughout his professional career, Gregg was more than happy to give back to the community and the profession, and served as Chair or President for an impressive list of organizations including: the Insurance Institute of Manitoba, the Insurance Institute of Canada, the Property & Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation, the Center for the Study of Insurance Operations, the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.


Gregg was also more than happy to serve on a wide range of community-based Boards and organizations, including the Winnipeg Big Brothers Association, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Arthritis Society of Manitoba (Past Chair and National Director), the Salvation Army Grace Hospice (Past Fundraising Chair) and as Finance Chair of the 1999 Pan American Games.


Gregg is currently serving his fifth year as Chair of The Winnipeg Foundation and is also poised to take on the role of Chair of Winnipeg’s 2010 United Way Campaign.

 

2008  

William Gray, FCA

Bill Gray graduated from Queen’s University with BA and BCom. degrees and consistently demonstrated outstanding academic excellence throughout his academic career, culminating with winning the Manitoba Gold Medal and CICA Silver Medal in the 1941 Uniform Final Examination.

Bill served at sea with the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. During his professional career he lectured extensively for both The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba and the Manitoba Law Society through the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s.

Elected an FCA by the Manitoba Institute in 1962, Bill enjoyed an outstanding professional career, serving as a trusted business advisor to a wide range of private and public clients, including some of the largest public companies in Manitoba such as Wawanesa Mutual Insurance and The Great-West Life Assurance Company.

Throughout his career Bill was highly respected by the clients he served and by the staff that worked for him. Bill retired as an active partner of Price Waterhouse in 1980 but continued to serve by participating in a number of overseas assignments to Bermuda and Malaysia. He also served as a Canadian Executive Services Overseas volunteer to Costa Rica, Lesotho and Tuvalu.

Throughout his professional career, Bill was more than happy to give back to the community and the profession and served as Chair or President for an impressive list of organizations including: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba (1961-62), The Canadian Club of Winnipeg, The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants Education Committee, The Industrial Development Board of Greater Winnipeg, The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and several sports organizations.

Bill’s leadership skills and knowledge were sought by many organizations. He was also more than happy to serve on a wide range of community-based Boards and organizations, including the University of Manitoba Board of Governors, the University of Winnipeg Board of Regents, the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education, the Canadian Executive Services Overseas, the Family Bureau of Greater Winnipeg, St. Andrews River Heights United Church, and Boy Scouts and Cubs Canada.

 

2007  

Gordon Webster, FCA

Gord earned his CA designation in 1963, and since that time has continued to bring honour to the profession through his distinguished service to the profession, his community and his career.

Gord began his career in 1958 with Price Waterhouse & Co (now PwC) and continued with the firm, except for a brief two-year span, until 1997. In his early career, Gord was involved with a number of Institute activities, initially as President of the Chartered Accountants Students Society of Manitoba and later as a lecturer as well as serving on a number of Institute committees - Student Relations, Student Recruitment, Computer, and Members and Students Activities.

During this time he was also involved in a number of community activities, which resulted in him receiving the Community Service Award from the City of Winnipeg in 1972.

Gord’s career with PwC then took him to Toronto, where he was admitted to partnership in 1974. In 1977 he became the first Office Managing Partner of the Mississauga Office, following which he served for a period of time in the Firm’s National Office.

During his time in Toronto, Gord continued his involvement with the CA profession, by serving on a number of Ontario Institute committees. In addition Gord was involved in a number of community activities in Mississauga. For his efforts, Gord was elected an Ontario FCA in 1985.

In 1991 Gord returned to Winnipeg to assume the role of Office Managing Partner of the Winnipeg PwC office. Gord picked up where he left off, involving himself in both Institute and community activities, including the United Way and Royal Winnipeg Ballet. This in turn earned him a Manitoba FCA designation in 1995.

Upon his “retirement” from PwC in 1997, Gord assumed the role of the first CEO of the Winnipeg Hospital Authority, an organization with a $800 million operation budget and a staff which encompassed 17,000 people. Gord then took on responsibility to carry out a Health Care Financial Management and Accountability Review for the Province of Manitoba. His career then took him to the The Faneuil Group, where he assisted with a restructuring of the organization and served as Executive Vice Chairman until just recently.

His community involvement has not slowed down either. Gord has recently joined the board of Rossbrook House Foundation. He was also the founding Chairman of the Manitoba Chapter of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

 

2006  

Kenneth Matchett, FCA

Ken obtained his CA designation in 1968 and received his FCA in 1979. Ken began his 31 year career in Canada's grain industry in the financial side of United Grain Growers' business before moving into operations as Manager, Grain Marketing Operations in 1981 and Manager, Country & Marketing Operations in 1985. In 1988, he moved to XCAN Grain Limited as Chief Executive Officer and retired in 2001.

Since his retirement from XCAN, Ken formed Rimal International Inc. and provides consulting services focusing chiefly on agri-food related business.

Ken is currently on the Board of Directors of the Vancouver Port Authority, to which he was appointed by Canada's Minister of Transportation in March 2005. He is active on the Audit Committee and Human Resource and Compensation Committee of that organization.

Ken has been and continues to be active in the agri-food industry in Canada and internationally. In 1997, he was appointed Co-Chair of the Canadian Agri-Food Marketing Council - an advisory group to Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for International Trade - and he continues in that role today.

He is Past Chair of the Canadian Exporters Association and founding Co-Chair of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association, resulting from his initiation of the merger of the Canadian Exporters Association and the Canadian Manufacturers Association in 1996.

Ken was appointed to the Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Asia Pacific and to Team Canada Inc., an advisory group to the Minister for International Trade. He is a former director of the Canada Grains Council, Canola Council of Canada, Winnipeg Commodity Exchange and is currently Chair of the Special Regulatory Committee of the WCE.

Ken was also a Director and International Treasurer of the Pacific Basin Economic Council (an association of business leaders from seventeen economies throughout the Pacific basin), Chair of the Canadian Committee of PBEC and is an International Officer Emeritus of PBEC. He was also Canadian Chair of the Canada-Japan Business Council's Food, Fish and Agriculture Committee for many years.

Also active in the community, Ken is currently Vice President of St. Charles Country Club. He is Past President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba (1979-80; Council 1974-80), Past President of the Winnipeg Football Club (1986-87; elected a Life Member in 1995; Board of Directors 1981-95), Director and Finance Committee Chair of the Misericordia General Hospital (1991-98), and Past Chair of the Financial Executives Institute of Winnipeg (1984-85). He also served on the Board of Governors of the Canadian Football League (1986-88), and was Vice-Chair in 1987.

 

2005  

Donald Penny, FCA

Don received his CA in 1963 and his FCA in 1984. He is a co-founder of Meyers Norris Penny LLP, joining the firm in 1962 and was CEO of the firm from 1977 to 1998. Don recently retired as the firm's Chair.

During his 21 years as CEO, Don developed a team of professionals dedicated to the providing accounting services and professional business advice to western Canadians. MNP is now among Canada's top 10 accounting firms.

Sharing his professional knowledge and skills, Don is active on many boards. He is currently serving as Chair of the audit committees at Manitoba Telecom Services (1997-present), the Winnipeg Stock Exchange (1997-present), Intrigna Communications Ltd. (1999-present), Fort Garry Brewing Co. Ltd. (1999-present), TruServ Canada (2000-present) and Jazz Golf Equipment Inc. (2000-present) where he is also a member of the Executive Committee.

Active in his community, Don has dedicated his time and efforts to numerous organizations in Brandon. He has served as President of the Brandon Economic Development Board, the YMCA and the Wasagaming Golf Club.

Don has also been Chair of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce and Vice-President of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce. With the Kinsmen, he has served as Secretary, Vice-President, President and was the Deputy Governor for Southwest Manitoba.

Leaving time for fun and sports, Don spent several years coaching Brandon Minor Hockey and Minor Soccer. He was also Finance Chair and Vice-President of the Board for the Jeux de Canada Winter Games 1979 Inc.

Involved in many other notable activities, Don was a member of the Board (1991-96) of Associated Accounting Firms International as served as Secretary-Treasurer, Vice-Chair, and Chair (1993-94). He was also Chair of the Board of Manitoba Public Insurance and Chair of MPI's Audit, Budget and Planning Committee. He was a member of the Manitoba Free Trade Committee and a member of the interdepartmental conversion team for Manitoba's Department of Education.

Don has also committed significantly to the profession. He has served as President/Chair of both the Manitoba Institute (1985-86) and the CICA's Board of Governors (1995-98) and has been active on many committees at both the provincial and national levels.

Don's contributions have not gone unnoticed. This year he was one of four Manitobans selected to become a member of the Order of Canada. He has also received the Canada 125 Commemorative Medal, awarded in recognition of significant contributions to compatriot community and to Canada, an Honorary Doctorate of Law from Brandon University and was named Businessman of the Year by the Brandon Chamber of Commerce.

 

2004  

Allan Moore, FCA

Al trained with the firm Clarkson Gordon & Co. in Hamilton, Ontario and received his CA designation in 1953 from the Ontario Institute. In 1957, after moving to Winnipeg, Al joined the Manitoba Institute. He was elected a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants in 1972.

It didn't take long for Al to begin to make his mark on the profession and the community in Manitoba. Between 1958 and 1968 he served terms on the Public Relations, Members Activities, Members Technical Activities, Taxation and the Student Recruitment Committees.

After a decade of serving on numerous committees, Al decided to run for Council and was elected in 1968 and served on Council until 1975. During his term on Council he also served on and chaired a variety of committees including Student Recruitment, Students and Examinations, Membership, Legislation and Professional Conduct. He served terms as Institute Secretary, Vice-President and ultimately as President in 1974-75.

Al continued his involvement in the Institute long after his term on Council ended serving on the Honours and Awards Committee in the late 1970's, the Manitoba Chartered Accountants Foundation Board through the 1990's and the CA Assistance Committee from 1991-2002.

Al was also involved in activities with CICA where he served as Vice-Chair of the Welcoming Committee for the 1963 CICA Conference. He was the Manitoba representative on several CICA committees as well including Public Relations in 1968-69, the Inter-Provincial Education Committee from 1969-71 and the Co-ordination Committee in 1972-73.

Al has also been involved extensively throughout his career in community activities often taking on senior leadership roles. In the early 1970's he served on the Board of Trustees of the United Way and was Campaign Chair in 1973. He served on the Board of the Manitoba Opera from 1983-91 and served in a number of positions including a term as President. He also served on the Boards of the St. Charles Country Club and the Winnipeg Squash Club and, as usual, he became President of both organizations.

He was Chairman of the Fencing Committee for the 1967 Pan American Games and also a Board member and member of the Management Committee of the Winnipeg Football Club for a number of years. Al also served as Commodore of the Victoria Beach Yacht Club.

During all of this time, Al also enjoyed a very successful business career. He was a partner with Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst & Young LLP) and served as Office Managing Partner of the Winnipeg office of the firm for many years. In addition, he was involved with Duff Roblin and John Greene in two very successful businesses: Metropol Security Ltd. and Metropol Emergency Resource Centre.

 

2003  

Delmore Crewson, FCA

Del received his CA in 1967 and is currently Vice-Chair and Senior Partner with Deloitte & Touche LLP. He is a Past President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba, former CICA Board of Governors member and Executive Committee member and former Chair and founding Board member of the Manitoba Chartered Accountants Foundation. In addition, he has served on numerous ICAM and CICA committees. For his contributions to the profession, Del received his FCA from the Manitoba Institute in 1982.

After his qualification as a CA, Del entered industry and was appointed Assistant Treasurer of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1974. After returning to public practice, he was appointed Managing Partner of Dunwoody & Co. in 1977 and was also on the Canadian Executive Committee for six years, including two years as the Canadian Chair.

Following the merger of Deloitte & Touche in 1990, Del was appointed National Director - Owner Managed Business, a role which he held for six years. In 1996, Del was appointed Managing Partner for the Winnipeg office of Deloitte & Touche for a three year period. In addition, Del was elected to the firm's National Board of Directors and served from 1994-2002. In 2001, Del was appointed as a Vice-Chair of the Deloitte & Touche Canadian firm.

Del's involvement in the community has been significant over the past 35 years and has continued well after obtaining his FCA designation over 20 years ago. He was appointed by the Premier of the Province of Manitoba and the Mayor of Winnipeg to Chair the Interim Steering Committee relating to the preservation of NHL Hockey in Winnipeg and has served as Chair of the Museum of Man and Nature Fund, Director, Treasurer, and Vice-Chair of the Museum of Man and Nature, Director and past Chair of the Associates of Faculty of Management - University of Manitoba, and as Director of the Centre of Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Management, University of Manitoba.

He has also served as Director and Chair of Finance committee of Forks Renewal Corporation and as Director and Treasurer of the Winnipeg Business Development Corporation. He was a volunteer with the United Way of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce.

 

2002  

Walter Dubowec, FCA

Walter received his CA designation in 1956 and was elected an FCA in 1973. Throughout the years he has contributed countless hours to the profession. Walter served on Council (1969-1971) and sat on many Institute committees.

Hitting the highlights, he was Chair of the following committees: Student Recruitment and Selection (1965-1966, 1969-1970), Long Range Educational Planning (1970-1971), Office Appraisal (1970-1974), Discipline (1983-1985), Technical and Research (1985-1986), Office Practice Assistance (1986-1987), Student Education (1987-1988) and the Ad Hoc Continuing Professional Development Committee(1988-89).

Walter was also involved on the national level and served on the CICA Board of Examiners (1963-1966) and the Inter-provincial Education Committee (1987-1988).

Walter's volunteer commitment and his contributions to the community have been so numerous that it's impossible to list them all. Walter served as the Manitoba Representative for the Federal Liberal Agency of Canada (1975-1995), and as Treasurer and Finance Chair of the Liberal Party in Manitoba.

He has worked with the Winnipeg Convention Centre (Treasurer) and for the senior citizens residence, Holy Family Nursing Home (Chair, Honourary Life Member).

Walter is the co-founder and Chair of Joe Brain Foundation Inc. and its subsidiary, J.M.B. Canadian Explorations Ltd., and has been President since their inception.

He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Canada since 1996. During that time he has served as Chair of the Audit Committee (4 years) and as a member of the following committees: Executive, Corporate Governance (4 years, recently reappointed), Planning & Budget, Premises and Y2K Advisory, and Human Resources.

Much of Walter's career focused on insolvency practice and he was made an Honourary Life Member of the Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals Association.

 

2001  

Gabriel Forest, FCA

One of ICAM’s past presidents (1987-1988), Gabe was a member of Council from 1979-1988 and has served on Institute committees for 30 years (1967-1997).

During those 30 years he has chaired the Public Relations (1979-1980), Student Recruitment (1981-1982), Office Practice Assistance (1982-1983), Professional Conduct (1985-1986), Audit (1985-1986), Government Relations (1987-1988), Nominating (1988-1989), and Honours and Awards (1990-1993) Committees. Gabe also co-chaired the Professional Development Policy Committee from 1980-1981.

He has served as Director with the Manitoba CA Educational and Research Fund (1984-1986) and the Manitoba CA Foundation Inc. (1986-1988) and has been Chair (1994-1996) and President (1996-1997) of the Manitoba CA Benevolent Association.

Also active with the CICA throughout his career, Gabe has sat on the national Public Relations (1979-1980) and Presidential Nominating (1988-1990) Committees as well as the Board of Governors (1985-1988).

The business community has also reaped the rewards of Gabe’s involvement. Over the years he has lectured on Business Accounting and Management for the Department of Industry & Commerce (1965-1978), served as Director of the Security General Insurance Company of Canada Ltd., Montreal (1965-1979), been a member of the Employee Pension Plan Sinking Fund with the City of St. Boniface (1968-1971), a lecturer for the Federal Business Development Bank (1972-1980), President of the French Business and Professional Men’s Club of Manitoba (1974-1975), and Chair of the Manitoba Municipal Auditors Association (1979-1980).

Outside of business, Gabe has also dedicated significant time to the community. He volunteered with the Catholic Immigration Services of Canada (1967-1980) where he was Treasurer (1967-1971), National President (1971-1977), and Past President (1977-1980). Gabe served as Director, Chairman of Finance (1976-1977) and Honourary Councillor (1977-1980) with Pregnancy Distress Services Inc. as well as being Chair of the Professional Division (1985) and Chair of the Accounting Division (1993) for the United Way Campaigns.

His interest in the arts is evident. Gabe began volunteering with Cercle Moliere Inc. of St. Boniface – Theatre Company in 1963. He has served as Treasurer (1963-1965) and President (1965-1967) and is currently a member of the Financial Advisory Committee. Gabe has also donated his time to the Dominion Drama Festival, Ottawa (1965-1970), the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Ltd. (1967-1980), and the Greater Winnipeg Schools Orchestra Inc. (1971-1977).

Gabe’s pride in his culture is shown in many ways. He was an Official Voyageur (1990-1991) for the Festival du Voyageur and has served as Treasurer of the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain Inc. (1970-1975) and Chez Nous Inc. (1971-1977).
